All of these tiny squares appear on sidewalks throughout Seattle. We couldn't figure out what they were at first, but learned that they're actually glass with magnesium, inserted when the city was rebuilt on higher ground, so that workers underground could see via daylight from the sidewalks. They're still in place (and functioning) today.
