Stay with me for these next few, because this is really interesting. We took Seattle's underground tour, and in a nutshell: In June of 1889, most of Seattle's business district burned to the ground in the Great Seattle Fire. Coupled with this, the city initially had been built far too low and close to the water, which created all sorts of flooding, sewage and property damage problems. This photo you see is of downtown Portland--only where these buildings used to be (including many artifacts and support brackets, etc.) is now situated one-to-two entire street grades below where Seattle's buildings all stand today.
