Kiddies Update 1: Skating, Ice Statues, and Lots of Snow!
Kiddie Penpals February 7, 2005
Well, you probably know by now that we’ve moved into our apartment in Canada. Charlie has found his favorite spot in the apartment, which is right in front of the fire. We’re glad he’s comfortable, but the problem is, he never moves! Do you have any ideas to help us get him to move around a little? We’re sort of worried he’ll become toast!
The city where we live now is called Ottawa. It’s the capital of Canada, where laws are made, like in Washington, DC. Canada is right above the United States, right? So we’re not all that far away now. It’s cold up here until April or so, but we bundle up and wear our hats and mittens. A few blocks away from our house is something called the Rideau Canal. In the summertime, it has boats bobbing around in it, but in the wintertime, we get to skate on it. Uncle Thom and I have gone a couple of times and had fun.
There’s a festival in Ottawa every year for three weeks called “Winterlude,” and the festival started this past weekend. Each year, they have a contest where people carve all sorts of things out of big blocks of ice! That’d be sort of hard to do, huh? Well, you wouldn’t believe the sorts of things that these ice carvers can make. They had ice statues of people, Cindarella’s castle made from ice, and even ice furniture! Ice furniture is neat to look at, but I don’t think I’d want to sit on it in my house, would you?
It hasn’t been too cold this past week, but I think we’re supposed to get some snow tomorrow, so we’ll be sure to bundle up, just like you guys do when you get snow. We wish you were here to help us build snowmen and warm up with hot cocoa and marshmellows. Maybe Charlie would even share his special spot by the fire with you, since he likes you all so much.
We miss you a lot, and so does Charlie! We’re all proud of you for how well everybody’s doing in school. We start school for cooking soon, so we’ll need to study hard just like you all do. I hope we’re as smart in school as you are.
Did you know that we call you our nephlets and neicelet? We do, and it makes us happy each time.
We love you guys. Come visit us soon, okay?
Love,
Uncle Thom, Aunt Jenny, and Charlie
